Just 9 years after Porsche scored its first overall win at the 24-Hour classic in Le Mans, it was up to privateers to continue the challenge when the factory's fast-but-fragile 936 effort came up short. The 935K3 of Ludwig/Whittington/Whittington took the overall victory in 1979, the first for a 911-based car; the US-built IMSA-class 935 of Barbour/Stommelen/Newman pictured here against a Le Mans landmark scored an impressive class win and 2nd overall.
